Our holiday cottages are ideally located for escapism in the picturesque parish of Rigsby, which is in the Lincolnshire Wolds - a designated area of outstanding natural beauty (ANOB). Rigsby is just 2 miles from Alford - renowned for its arts & crafts and striking five-sailed windmill. The holiday cottages are perfect for walkers and cyclists, with multiple public footpaths and cycle routes on the doorstep.
We are within easy reach of the award winning, golden-sanded coastal resorts of Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea. Louth, the capital of the Lincolnshire Wolds, is 10 miles away and the historic city of Lincoln is under an hour away. You can rent our holiday accomodation all year round including Christmas and New Year.
Lincolnshire Wolds - Scenic Beauty
The Lincolnshire Wolds are a nationally important and cherished landscape. They were designated an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) in 1973 on account of their high scenic unspoilt beauty. We love the long distance views from the rear of our holiday cottages, over our farmland and across the rolling chalky downs to the coast. The big skies are great for cloud watching and star gazing too.
Lincolnshire Wolds - Paradise for Ramblers
The Lincolnshire Wolds are made for walking, having miles of well maintained footpaths in expanses of open countryside and are home to the largest walking festival of its kind on UK Mainland. The festival caters for families, from tinies in pushchairs to teenagers, with walks ranging from an hour-long town tour to a rigorous ramble taking up to 4 days! We love that we have so many options to walk from our doorstep, with freedom to explore without getting the car out.
Lincolnshire Wolds - Haven for Cyclists
The Wolds have some of the UK’s quietest roads and there are routes developed for all types of cyclists, from beginner to the more advanced. All our family enjoy cycling the C4 cycle route that runs through Rigsby
Alford, our nearest town, is just a 15 minute walk from the cottages or a 5 minute drive. Alford is a popular market town with much to offer. The Alford Manor house is well worth exploring and an opportunity to enjoy homemade cakes and biscuits in their tea rooms. If you should be visiting over the late May or August Bank Holiday Weekends, we highly recommend Alford Craft market that features interesting crafts such as glass-blowing, blacksmithing, ceramics, restoration crafts and musical instrument makers. Download the Welcome to Alford pdf document to learn more or visit Alford Town website.
Lincolnshire Wolds - Thriving Market Towns
Market towns like Louth, Horncastle and Market Rasen still have vibrant centres that house bustling individual shops. Our nearest and the one we love to frequent is Louth (10 miles away), which is considered the capital of the Wolds. Louth has many unique and interesting shops, including department store - Eve and Ranshaw - that has been a fixture in the town since 1781. Plus the town holds regular craft, food and farmers’ markets.
Lincolnshire Wolds - Fine food locally produced
Lincolnshire has it all when it comes to growing and rearing produce. The one we like to shout about is the highly lauded Lincolnshire Poacher cheese, as the family of a cousin of ours produces this on their farm just 2 miles away from us.
Lincolnshire - Stunning coastline
The east coast with its long, wide and sandy award winning Blue Flag beaches (at resorts like Skegness, Mablethorpe and Sutton-on-Sea) is less than a 30 minutes drive away from the Wolds. One of the largest areas of unspoilt coastline in eastern England, with some of the best national nature reserves and sites of specific scientific interest in the country. A particular favourite of ours, with something for all ages, is Sutton-on-Sea. Their Gardens - in addition to the beautiful beach - feature a waterfall, children’s play area, bowling green and a Mapleleaf Paddling Pool.
Lincolnshire Wolds - Connect with nature
Wildlife is abundant and flourishing in Rigsby, allowing guests to reconnect with nature. You can listen to a sample of the birdsong that can be enjoyed from the cottage gardens on our YouTube Channel. We have named our holiday cottages Owl and Pheasant after the Barn Owl resident in our farmyard and the many pheasants our fields provide cover for. In the ancient Rigsby Wood there is a good range of breeding birds, including tawny owl, great spotted woodpecker, treecreeper, finches and five species of both tits and summer warblers. The reserve retains a rich ground flora, bluebells abound in late spring, wood anemone, wood-sorrel, early-purple orchid, sweet woodruff and ragged-robin, which is an old meadow relict species, are to be seen. In the fields en-route to South Thoresby you can often see 'mad March hare' behaviour when the unreceptive females brown hares fend off the passionate males. Nature lovers, birdwatchers and conservationists that stay with us can head through to the wilder stretches of sand and the tranquillity of our rural coast at Gibraltar Point.
Lincolnshire - Value for Money
Eating and drinking out is inexpensive. Many attractions are free of charge e.g. Donna Nook Nature Reserve. People tell us they feel recharged, having slept deeper due to the fresh air, tranquillity and lack of light pollution and you can’t put a price on a good night’s sleep?!
